Van Hire Excess Insurance Policy Documents

Did you know that if your rental van is stolen or damaged, you may be liable for an excess charge even if it wasn't your fault? This could leave you hundreds - or even thousands - of pounds out of pocket.

What is van hire excess insurance?

When you hire a van, your van rental company will likely include insurance cover for the duration of the rental period. However, this cover will typically include a large excess should an accident occur. For vans, this excess can be thousands of pounds. For this reason, you will usually be offered additional insurance to cover this excess when you arrive at the rental desk to pick up your van. Our daily van hire excess policy can be purchased at a competitive price online and up to a year in advance, so that you may be reimbursed your excess should your rental van be damaged or stolen during the rental period.

We insure the policy holder, not the rental vehicle. If you have purchased our an insuremyvanhire policy, decline the van rental company’s excess cover at the counter when you collect the van. Please note that you will need to ensure your credit card has enough credit to cover the full excess amount at the time of collecting the van, as the rental company may reserve the funds on your card even if you are not charged. If the van is damaged or stolen, the van rental company will charge your credit card for the excess amount. You can then claim for a full reimbursement of the excess under your insuremyvanhire policy (subject to any limits).

For our daily van hire excess policy protection cover to apply, you must ensure your van rental agreement must includes insurance with an excess. This is often referred to as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) cover.

Is van hire excess insurance a legal requirement?

No, daily van excess cover is a voluntary insurance. If you have purchased our policy, decline the van rental company's excess cover at the counter when you collect the van. If the van is damaged or stolen, the van rental company will charge your credit card for the excess amount and you then claim for full reimbursement on your policy from insuremyvanhire. We insure the policy holder, not the rental vehicle.
