Compare our options of Car Hire Excess Insurance
If you hire a rental car and suffer damage to the car, or experience the loss of your hire vehicle as a result of theft, you may be liable to pay towards repairing or replacing the vehicle if you need to make a claim.
With our Car Hire Excess Insurance, while you’ll initially have to pay the excess charges upfront, you’ll be able to claim back the excess cost subject to your maximum level of cover.
Without excess protection from insurance4carhire, you won’t be able to claim any of your excess charge back should you run into the unexpected.
Insurance4carhire Car Hire Excess Insurance is only available for EU residents.
Our Car Hire Excess Insurance policies include as standard:
- Excess insurance — Cover against excess costs of up to €6,500 in total, per year, if your hire car is damaged or stolen.
- Drivers aged between 21 and 84 — Cover for a wide age range of insured drivers.
- Additional drivers — Cover for up to five additional drivers, as long as they’re named in your rental agreement. There’s no need to add them to your hire excess policy.
- Misfuelling and car key cover — Cover for each, up to €500 per claim.
We also know that car hire is different for everyone, which is why we offer two different types of policy so you can find an option that best suits your trip:
- Single-trip policies — Cover for a single trip, of up to 120 consecutive days. Great if you’re planning to rent a car on a one-off occasion.
- Annual multi-trip policies — Cover for multiple trips for a year, at a fixed cost; provided no single trip exceeds 120 days. This could be an option if you frequently hire cars for travel or commuting.

If you incur damage to your hire car and need to make a claim, you may be liable to pay an agreed-upon amount that goes towards the cost of repairing or replacing the vehicle. This is called an ‘excess’. The amount of excess you’ll be required to pay is set by the hire company’s insurer, and the rest of the claim will also be covered by their insurer.
Our Car Hire Excess Insurance is only available for EU residents.
If you’re a resident of the UK or Isle of Man, you can visit our partner site Swinton for a quote.
You will usually have to pay the excess on a car hire insurance policy immediately at the start of a claim. After the excess amount has been paid, the car rental company’s insurer will open an investigation to find out who was at fault and whether the claim is valid or not.
With a Car Hire Excess Insurance policy from insurance4carhire, you’ll be able to claim back the excess charges subject to your cover level
You will likely have to pay the excess for any damage that results from an accident – even if you weren’t at fault. The excess may be waived if a third-party insurer takes liability for the damage, but this can vary across providers and by country.
